Wrap Video: Stranger Things

I should have posted this months ago, but… stuff. Anywho, a wrap video on the Stranger Things activation we did with N3rdfusion and iiJeriichoii. It was a terrific program.

Behind the Scenes: Stranger Things on Twitch

My job at Twitch is coming up with programming ideas for various brands. Let’s say a plumbus brand wants to reach the Twitch audience. I sit in a room, think really hard about plumbuses, then say something like, “Let’s send a thousand plumbuses to the moon, strapped to flying armchairs, and the armchairs are playing CS:GO.”

The plumbus brand would probably say something like, “Can the armchairs be dining chairs and can they play Gang Beasts instead?” And I would say, “Probably.”

That’s my job. I think of a crazy (and sometimes less crazy) thing to do. If a brand likes it, it sells. Then, someone else entirely has the arduous task of making my crazy idea come to life. It is a good job.

Unfortunately, I don’t often get to be on set when my idea comes to life. I’m usually back in that room thinking of another thing to do with plumbuses. But, just last week, the stars aligned and I had the luxury of visiting the set for a program I was extremely excited about – a sort of Twitch plays haunted basement for Netflix’s Stranger Things.

It was fucking terrific. Huge props to iiJeriichoii and the boys at N3rdfusion for being awesome hosts and very good sports. Check out the VOD of the entire broadcast here. A few behind-the-scenes photos behind the cut.

HCF Podcast #11: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare & Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

To me, this episode is all about embarrassment. Playing certain games can be, apparently, embarrassing. Failing at a game in front of strangers, equally, if not more so. All the man hours that have gone into boob physics? Embarrassing for sure.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why Chris would be embarrassed to play Call of Duty. Sure, the annual release cycle has caused the franchise to drop the ball here and there (:::cough::: GHOSTS :::cough:::), but the game is popular for a reason: it’s fun! FUN, I SAY!

For my part, I got to fail in front of strangers and feel like an asshole while playing Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. Painful experiences all around this week, but they make for an entertaining episode.

Listen for yourself!

“In the end, we all love video games.”

Question: How do you feel about terms like “casual gamer” or “hardcore gamer?”

I hate terms. A Flappy Bird addict versus an MLG player, both love what they’re playing. Some people are just more passionate about a certain game or genre than others, and others play professionally. Whether it’s competitive gaming or full-time commentaries on Twitch or YouTube.  Someone calling themselves a “hardcore gamer” is as ridiculous sounding as someone calling themselves a “girl gamer.” We get it. In the end, we all love video games.

My name is Beau Ryan and I’m the Head of Entertainment at Robotoki. I’m basically leading a brand new entertainment division at a indie video game studio. I love the entertainment and game industry, so as a creative, it’s pretty much the dream job for me.
